About Malengo

Malengo is a non-profit organization (Germany: gGmbH; US: 501(c)(3)) that facilitates international educational migration. We provide mentoring and financial support to students from low-income countries who want to complete a Bachelor’s degree or vocational training in a high-income country. We aim to give millions of students the opportunity to pursue the education they want, and to lift themselves and their families out of poverty in the process. We believe that this is one of the most effective poverty reduction strategies in per-dollar terms that is available.

Malengo currently supports low-income, high-ability students in Uganda in applying for and completing a Bachelor’s degree, and refugees in Kenya seeking to do vocational training in Germany. By 2030, we aim to support students from most low-income and lower-middle income countries, and facilitate undergraduate studies in more than a dozen destination countries. Our program is sustainable by combining a strong network of volunteer mentors with a financial model in which students support future generations of scholars once they earn a high enough income (Income Share Agreements, ISAs).

Five complete cohorts of Malengo students, which comprise about 300 young people, are already in Germany. The first of these students have already completed their studies. Around 150 more students are preparing to arrive this fall.

In addition, around 250 young people are preparing to come to Germany to start a vocational training (mostly in nursing), the first ones in the spring of 2026. These young people are currently attending intensive German language training in Kenya and Rwanda. Most of them are refugees, mainly from South Sudan, Somalia, Burundi and DRC.

In Germany, Malengo works closely with employers, training providers, and institutions to place scholars in apprenticeships, internships, and student jobs, particularly in sectors facing critical skills shortages such as healthcare. Employer trust, high-quality placements, and sustainable partnerships are central to Malengo’s impact.

We are now looking for an Employer Engagement & Partnerships Lead to engage employers and find suitable vocational trainings for our scholars.

Your Role

As Employer Engagement & Career Development Manager, you will bridge the gap between Malengo’s scholars and the German labor market, with a primary focus on TVET (vocational training) placements.

Your core responsibility is to secure and maintain apprenticeship opportunities, particularly in healthcare, while also developing pathways in green skills, logistics, cleaning, gastronomy, engineering, and business administration. In conversations with relevant employers, you will identify internships and student job opportunities for our university students where applicable.

Your work will directly shape the success of Malengo’s programs by building employer trust, expanding partner networks, and representing Malengo within Germany’s vocational and skills ecosystem.

Your Responsibilities

1. Employer Engagement & Network Development

Build, expand, and sustain a strong employer network offering:

– Apprenticeships (Ausbildung)

  • Primary focus on healthcare professions

  • Additional focus on TVET-relevant and future-oriented sectors, including logistics, gastronomy, cleaning services, technical trades, and green/skills-adjacent roles

  • Student jobs (e.g. logistics, hospitality, cleaning), in coordination with internal teams

  • Internships, particularly aligned with engineering and business administration, where relevant to Malengo scholars

Key activities include:

– Representing Malengo at job fairs, conferences, vocational education events, and industry forums.

– Proactively identifying and engaging employers and vocational training institutions (Berufsschulen) through targeted outreach, visits, and structured follow-ups.

– Building and maintaining relationships with employers, vocational schools, and training providers to enable high-quality apprenticeship (Ausbildung) placements.

– Acting as the main point of contact for employer and vocational school partners, ensuring satisfaction, continuity, and long-term collaboration.

– Strengthening Malengo’s visibility and credibility within Germany’s vocational training ecosystem, including both companies and educational institutions.

– Tracking and reporting on partnerships, placements, and outcomes, including success stories for internal and external stakeholders.

– Negotiating and formalizing cooperation agreements with employers, vocational schools, and training providers.

2. Program Strategy & Continuous Improvement

– Contribute to the development of employer engagement strategies with a clear TVET-first perspective.

– Collect structured feedback from employers and scholars to continuously improve placement quality and processes.

– Collaborate closely with internal teams in Germany and East Africa to ensure alignment between employer needs, scholar profiles, and program objectives.

– Support cross-program collaboration by identifying and promoting student job and internship opportunities for Malengo’s university scholars where employer needs and pathways intersect.
