I’m very excited to announce a new way of supporting Malengo students, while also earning a return on your charitable dollars.
Anyone investing at $25,000 or more can now do so via our new partner Neta. Neta sets up a donor-advised fund (DAF) for you, and money you contribute is an immediate tax deduction (as a charitable deduction) and directly supports Malengo students.
Your money directly supports low-income students from East Africa on their journey to a university or vocational degree in Europe. Students who graduate and secure a job with a sufficiently high income make repayments to Malengo through income share agreements (ISAs). These repayments then flow back into your Neta DAF, allowing you to not only recycle your money, but also earn a return on it. You can then re-invest those funds into future Malengo students, or use them for other charitable purposes. (You cannot earn a private return on it; it remains charitable money.)
Getting started with Neta is extremely quick and easy: you can begin supporting our students today! If you already have a DAF, you can make a grant from it to Neta. If you have a foundation, contributions to Neta count towards your 5% annual distribution requirement. If you are brand new to the DAF space, welcome! You can still get started very simply by setting up a DAF with Neta, and contributions into it are charitable donations eligible for a tax deduction.
You can read more about Malengo’s investment opportunities on the Neta platform:
Impact at a glance:
Students enter the program with average annual incomes of ~$500, and graduate into jobs earning $39,000–$45,000/year — a 15-90x income increase.
Fewer than 1% of students have left the program to date. Students’ average grades are on paar with their German peers.
Supported by the Global Development Incubator, The Shapiro Foundation, GiveWell, OpenPhilanthropy, Unorthodox Philanthropy, the Livelihood Impact Fund, and endorsed by Nobel Laureate Michael Kremer, who has described Malengo as one of the most cost-effective poverty alleviation programs available.
We’re grateful to our partners at Neta for helping us create this innovative structure for our students and supporters, and a perpetual engine of education, mobility, and opportunity.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me as Malengo’s CEO ([email protected]).
