Malengo today announced that Chad Sterbenz has become its Chief Executive Officer. Chad joined Malengo in November 2025 and most recently served as Chief Investment Officer (CIO). He succeeds founder Johannes Haushofer, who becomes Founder and Executive Chair.
The appointment comes as Malengo scales its model of supporting students from low-income countries in completing a college degree or vocational training in Europe. The program is made sustainable through income share agreements, in which successful students contribute a share of their income to finance the next generation. A recent randomized evaluation published as a World Bank working paper found dramatically increased incomes and psychological well-being amongst participating students.
“There is extraordinary talent among young people in Africa; what’s often missing is access. Our job is to open that door, through education and migration, for many more of them, and to keep proving that the model works for our scholars and for the funders who back them. Having seen this work up close over the past year, I’m honored to lead it into what comes next.”
– Chad Sterbenz, Chief Executive Officer of Malengo
Founder Johannes Haushofer remains on the board, where he will chair a new Impact & Evidence Committee that will advise the board on how Malengo measures and learns from its impact. He will also continue to represent Malengo with funders and scholars.
“Chad has spent the past two decades leading international teams and organizations at the intersection of social impact, economic development, and investment. Before joining Malengo as Chief Investment Officer last year, he served in the same role at Kiva, the well-known microfinance organization. He knows our work intimately, and we’re very fortunate that he will lead us into our next phase of growth. On a personal level, I’m very excited to continue working closely with Chad and Malengo.”
– Johannes Haushofer, Founder and Executive Chair of Malengo
“Chad has been an invaluable leader as Chief Investment Officer, and the board has unanimous confidence in his vision and ability to lead Malengo into its next phase of growth. We are also deeply grateful to Johannes Haushofer for his vision as founder and look forward to his continued leadership as Founder and Executive Chair, and in leading the newly formed Impact & Evidence Committee.”
– Daniel Yu, Board Chair of Malengo
